"Father, see that I show my wounds to you. All men, bend your knees to your Father so that he may reach out his hand to you" - Chorus of Virtues, Patriarchs, Prophets, and The Soul
Visionary. Philosopher. Mystic. Hildegard von Bingen stands as a rare figure among Western Classical Music as a woman whose work survives and is performed regularly in the 21st Century.
For the third instalment of our 2022 Salon Series, we will be exploring St Hildegard von Bingen's Ordo Virtutum. This production will feature a condensed cast and piano accompaniment for the rarely performed work. As a part of our Salon Series, this work will be performed in concert with cabaret seating in the intimate space of Ferguson Hall.
A very early example of a sacred music drama, Hildegard wrote the work around 1151 for the nuns of her monastery who undertook the first performance of the work. Ordo Virtutum also stands as a rare work of medieval music drama that survived with text and music attributed to a composer, and is one of the earliest works of morality play.
Rarely performed, the work tells the story of the Human Soul traversing its way through life. It is tempted by the Devil, but ultimately decided to follow the path of the Virtues to heaven.
