"Most charming Madonna, one word more.
I tremble to take up again my unending
journey" (Zanetto to Silvia)
Concordia Ensemble will be holding a concert performance of Mascagni's rarely performed gem of verismo opera, Zanetto alongside selections from his well-loved Cavalleria Rusticana. If you like works such as Tosca, Pagliacci, stories featuring unrequited lovers and swaggering mezzo pants roles, then this is the concert for you!
Zanetto
A rarely performed verismo opera, Zanetto opens with Silvia, a courtesan, swearing off the love of all men. Enter Zanetto, the swaggering young wandering musician here to steal Silvia's heart. Silvia quickly remembers him as the young man whom she is enamoured with. Managing to convince Zanetto to stay and live with her, she then rejects him when he says he would regard her as a sister and sends him on his way, so that she may continue to lament her lost love.
